Mateusz Solarz, selector of the ANIMA contest, invites to the screenings of competition animations.
Still from animation "Jonas and the Sea"
ANIMA contest is a competition between the professional, independent and student-made animations from all around the world. Last year 1433 proposals were submitted for the contest and approximately 69 were retained. These included newest films of acclaimed directors such as Dennis Tupicoff, Koji Yamamura, Dmitry Geller, Ülo Pikkov, Steven Subotnick, Ferenc Ćako i Steven Woloshen. It is also a great opportunity to see latest pieces made by directors that are known from previous editions – Michella and Uri Kranot, Max Porter, Ru Kuwahata, Daisy Jacobs, Sasha Svirsky, Sarina Nihei, Marc Riba and Anna Solanas. Polish animation will be represented by Izabela Plucińska, Zbigniew Czapla, Jarosław Konopka, Paulina Ziółkowska and Jadwiga Kowalska. Movies came from all around the world: most European countries, North America (Canada, USA), South America (Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador), Asia (Georgia, Israel, China, Japan) and Australia.
ANIMA contest will show the multiplicity of animation techniques, from classic hand-drawn and painted film, through the masterly crafted puppet movie, pixilation, rotoscoping, well known digital CGI animation, scratching directly on a film, found footage, ending up with unique techniques like painting life-sized characters on the real walls or creating a movie using only a typewriter.
As always at the contest there will be surprising diversity of topics. We will get a peek of private relationships (Evening, Oh Mother!, Negative space), social bonds (Sog, Rascals, The Bridge over the River), we will see some beautiful (Ježeva Kuća), funny (Our Wonderful Nature – The Common Chameleon), but also dangerous (To Build a Fire) nature, we will get to know Far-Eastern inspirations of European filmmakers (The Grateful Wolf, Fishes, Swimmers, Boats), and European inspirations of Far-Eastern directors (Monstropedia). We will also see screen versions of literary masterpieces made 12 years after reading the book („The Stranger” in my Head). Through the serious issues, like study of disease (Late Afternoon), stories about death (Liv, Dead Reckoning) and war stories (Dead horses) we will get to lighter topics. We will travel to Antarctida (Antarctica), and accompany the first woman to break a sound barrier (L’Aviatrice). There will also be a little bit of Wild West (Bullet Time) and brass bands (Parade, A Festive Wind). We will be amazed by the sky (Starhunters) and the sea (Jonas and the Sea). As an example of an atypical approach to the plot we will see an amazing movie about… nothing happening (Nothing happens).
Enormous dose of the most important issues of mankind served on a high artistic level: Ladies and Gentlemen, ANIMA contest!
