Artistic animated features rarely reach a broad audience. They are hardly ever screened in theaters and their DVD release is usually limited to a small number of copies. Every year, the Etiuda&Anima festival offers its viewers a unique opportunity to watch the most interesting animated features of recent years on the big screen. During this year's edition of the festival, we will present “Louise in Winter” by Jean-Francois Laguionie, “The Red Turtle” by Michaël Dudok de Wit, “Rocks in my pockets” by Signe Baumane and “Mune: Guardian of the Moon” by Benoît Philippon and Alexandre Heboyan.
Polish premiere of “Louise in Winter”
Etiuda&Anima 2016 will show – for the first time in Poland – the latest film of Jean-François Laguionie, a winner of Short Film Palme d'Or for his “Rowing Across the Atlantic” (“La Traversée de l'Atlantique à la rame”) at the 1978 Cannes Film Festival. „Louise in Winter” is a poetic tale of solitude and passing of time. Louise, an elderly woman, spends her summers in the seaside town of Billigen. When the last train of the season leaves without her, she realizes that she must survive the winter alone. As the tides rise, it becomes clear that no one is looking for her, and Louise must adapt not only to the conditions, but also to the solitude. She sets up a camp on the shore and finds the companion of an old dog, also forgotten.

“The Red Turtle”
The latest film of Michaël Dudok de Wit has been acclaimed as a masterpiece of silence. “The Red Turtle” has no dialogues. The animation depicts the life of a castaway on a deserted tropical island populated by turtles, crabs and birds. The man tries to escape from the island on a raft, but he is confronted by a giant, red turtle that seems to thwart his efforts. “The Red Turtle” was co-created by the German Wild Bunch studio, French Why Not Productions and the legendary Japanese Studio Ghibli.

“Rocks in my pockets”
A feature debut from the Latvian animation director, Signe Baumane. A tale of five women from Baumane’s family, including herself, who struggle with depression and madness. In this at once bitter and humour-saturated film, the history of Latvia is intertwined with personal issues and family secrets. “Rocks in my pockets” was selected as the Latvian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards in 2015.

“Mune: Guardian of the Moon”
French 3D animated film released in 2014. A poetic tale of a little faun named Mune, a Guardian of the Moon who has to recover the Sun that was stolen by his fault. “Mune: Guardian of the Moon” delights with its glamourous visual side. Some critiques recognised the influences of Salvador Dali's paintings as well as inspirations of the animation styles of Luc Besson, Tim Burton and Hayao Miyazaki. “Mune: Guardian of the Moon” was nominated for the Best Feature Film award at Annecy International Animated Film Festival. It won the Young People's Jury Award at the TIFF Kids International Film Festival and the Best Film Award at the Tokyo Anime Awards.
