As a subject of this attentive and unconventional reading we are going to take \u201cThe Nose\u201d \u2013 a short story by Nikolai Gogol and its animated adaptation directed by Alexander Alexeieff and Claire Parker (1963).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11917\" src=\"http:\/\/etiudaandanima.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/nos11.jpg\" alt=\"nos11\" width=\"900\" height=\"651\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fundacja.etiudaandanima.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/nos11.jpg 900w, https:\/\/fundacja.etiudaandanima.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/nos11-600x434.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:13px; line-height:20px; text-align:justify;\">We invite you to play with interpretation between a great literature and a visionary animation! Can animated movie be the rightful adaptation of literary mastery? Is it possible for animation to express the gloominess of writer\u2019s imaginings? Can it take a simple reading to another quality?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:13px; line-height:20px; text-align:justify;\">\u201eThe Nose\u201d by Nikolai Gogol was written in 1836. The title character happens to separate from its owner\u2019s face and starts to live his own life...<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:13px; line-height:20px; text-align:justify;\">The authors were always fascinated by all the physical transformations and surreal phenomena. Alexander Alexeieff and Claire Parker interpret Gogol\u2019s idea very creatively and making a good use of old technique \u2013 a pinscreen animation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11916\" src=\"http:\/\/etiudaandanima.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/nez12.jpg\" alt=\"nez12\" width=\"750\" height=\"563\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fundacja.etiudaandanima.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/nez12.jpg 750w, https:\/\/fundacja.etiudaandanima.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/nez12-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:13px; line-height:20px; text-align:justify;\">\u201eClaire Parker and Alexander Alexeieff have engineered and patented a large horizontal desktop with 500 thousands pins in it. They could regulate the length of the pins with a set of rollers and spatulas and get relief images in a greyscale. The pin could give a white colour by being completely pushed in, black when pushed out and those between \u2013 different shades of gray. For the first time the effect was seen in the movie \u201cThe Night on \u0141ysa G\u00f3ra\u201d based on symphonic poem by Modest Musorgski and it could be watched as a movable etching or as a kind of black and white oil paintings. Every frame change entailed rearrange of the whole screen, lights and exposure time. As Alexeieff said in the interview, it was very difficult to create more than 3-4 minutes of film yearly in this technique. Until 1980 Alexeieff and Parker made only five short movies with a pinscreen. All of them combines are less than 40 minutes. In 1960\u2019s they were trying to make their invention public for creating some abstract movies, but it ended with just a few promising experiments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:13px; line-height:20px; text-align: right;\">- Pawe\u0142 Sitkiewicz, \u201eW pogoni za niemoz\u0307liwym.
