Shortly in Europe

The serie “Europe in the short film” has just started. Yesterday we saw the Polish short films, created with the support of the Munk Studio.SAILOR'S GRAVEOn Wednesday awaits us an overview of the most interesting shorts movies from Spain. During the following days we will see productions from Belgium, Switzerland and Romania.  Be vigilant, perhaps among the artists presenting their short films debuts are the future masters of European cinema.

Boguslaw Zmudziński, director of  Etiuda&Anima Film Festival about shorts:

Today few viewers watching films on large, small and really small screens realize that the history of film does not coincide with the history of full-length feature film and that only short films fill it from the very beginning to this day. Of course their function was different when in their first decades the programmes of the then film screenings were made from film compilations, and it is different today, when driven out of cinemas, at best they fill the programmes of thematic television channels, are made available on the Internet or – what plays an important role considering the great number of film festivals organized the world over – make the base of the programmes of film events devoted to (it is a very imprecise term) the so called non-feature film forms.

Despite huge effort from renowned artists, considering the short film form of equal status with full-length film, for the majority of directors the short film is at most a transitional stage on the way to reaching the peak of their careers. At first as an etude made in film school, then as a professional exercise to start the artistic work with full-length films. The word debut is not accidentally used only to describe the first feature film and there is no trace of a tendency to move its use to earlier stages of artistic work.

ANÓMALOIrrespective of the modern status of short films, these films are made in many countries and even though most often they constitute first of all a significant stage in the development of young artists’ talent, they also happen to have their entirely independent value. At this year’s festival we have decided to sketch a panorama of European short film comprising five selected national cinematographies, in which, we know, a considerable significance to the production of short films is attached.
